Subharti’s distance MBA: how the two years actually run

Two institutions, one degree — and only one of them awards it

You will do most of this MBA at your own desk, on hours you protect yourself — and yet what you finish with is a full university degree. It comes from Swami Vivekanand Subharti University (SVSU), the NAAC A university in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, which confers the MBA in its own name and holds the UGC entitlement under which the distance and online delivery runs. That is the whole recognition story, and everything else on this page sits underneath it.

IICT is the tie-up on this programme — the initials stand for Indian Institute of Commerce and Trade — and it serves as the distance learning centre: the teaching, the mentoring, the study help. It does not award the MBA and does not hold the entitlement. Those belong to the university.

If you take nothing else from this page, take the split. It decides who you chase when a result is wrong, whose name appears on the certificate, and which institution you verify before you pay anyone.

What distance mode actually asks of you

A campus MBA carries you. Attendance is scheduled, deadlines are announced in a room you are already sitting in, and you can tell whether you are behind by looking at the person next to you. Distance removes all three of those crutches at once. What replaces them is a calendar you maintain yourself.

Three things distance students consistently underestimate:

• The first month. Nothing is due yet, so nothing gets done — and the backlog that builds in weeks one to four is the backlog people are still carrying at the end of the semester. Start the reading before you feel any pressure to.
• The silence around assessment. Without a classroom, weeks can pass with no signal about whether you have understood anything. Manufacture the signal: write short answers from memory, then check them against the material. Reading a chapter and being able to answer on it are different skills, and only one of them is examined.
• The pull of work. Most people on this route are employed. Work will always feel more urgent than a chapter. A fixed slot that survives a bad week — even a short one — beats a generous plan that collapses the first time a deadline lands at the office.

The practical version: pick two or three protected hours a week, put them in the same place in the calendar every week, and treat the syllabus as a queue you draw from rather than a mountain you look at. Our guide for working professionals goes further into structuring the two years around a job.

Using the IICT centre well — and knowing its limits

IICT is an autonomous institute registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, running since 1997 and based in Lucknow. On this programme its job is delivery: teaching the syllabus, mentoring students through it, and providing study support across the two years.

That is worth more than it sounds, because the single largest failure mode in distance education is not difficulty — it is having nobody to ask when the material stops making sense. A centre earns its place when you use it for exactly that:

• Ask early, not at revision time. A question raised in week three costs ten minutes. The same question raised in the week before an examination costs a paper.
• Use it for sequencing. People who have watched previous cohorts know which papers are heavy and which fortnight everyone loses. That is scheduling intelligence you cannot get from a syllabus PDF.
• Use it for the administrative maze. Forms, enrolment numbers, examination paperwork, document corrections — a centre that handles these routinely will save you weeks.

Equally, be clear about what a centre cannot do. It cannot change the syllabus, alter a result, reissue a certificate, or make a commitment about entitlement. Every one of those is the university’s, and a centre that implies otherwise is telling you something useful about itself. Examinations: settle the logistics before you pay, not after

Examination arrangements belong to the awarding university, and universities revise them between sessions more often than they revise syllabi. So do not take last year’s answer, and do not take a verbal one. Ask, for your session:

1. Which pattern applies — a designated examination centre, remote proctoring, or continuous assessment through submitted work?
2. If it is centre-based: where is the nearest venue, and who allocates it? Distance study with a six-hour journey attached to every paper is a different commitment from the one you thought you were making.
3. If it is remotely proctored: what are the technical requirements, and can you do a dry run rather than discovering a problem on the day?
4. How is the weighting split between continuous work and the final examination?
5. What is the re-examination route, what does it cost, and how long does it delay completion?

A dual specialisation: you choose two, so choose them as a pair

This is a Dual Specialisation MBA. The specialisations available are Human Resource Management, Marketing, Finance, Strategic Management and Operations Management.

Two slots is a genuine advantage in distance mode, where you are not going to absorb a specialisation by osmosis from classmates. The common mistake is treating them as two independent choices. Treat them as a pair, with one anchoring where you already work and one opening the door you are trying to walk through:

• Finance + Strategic Management — for someone in accounts or control who wants to move toward planning and business partnering rather than deeper into reporting.
• Marketing + Operations Management — the realistic pairing for distribution, retail and e-commerce roles, where the campaign and the fulfilment are the same conversation.
• Human Resource Management + Strategic Management — the HR business-partner direction, where the value is understanding what the business is trying to do before designing the people process for it.
• Operations Management + Finance — for plant, logistics and service-delivery roles where every improvement eventually has to be argued in rupees.

₹65,000 for the two years — and the questions that make the number meaningful

₹65,000 is the all-in figure for the two years. A single total is more useful than a per-semester figure, because it is the number you can actually compare against other universities on our fees by university table and the tiers on the main fees page.

What still needs asking, in writing:

• What the total covers, and what is billed separately — examination, re-examination, project, transcript and certificate issue are the usual candidates.
• The instalment schedule and the dates, so a due date does not collide with your own cash flow.
• Whether any cost sits outside the fee entirely — travel to an examination venue is the one distance students forget to budget.

On payment, apply the rule this site applies everywhere: your receipt must connect the payment to your enrolment in the university’s programme, and you should keep every one of them for years, not months. Never pay an individual, and never share an OTP with anyone.

What distance mode changes — and what it does not

It does not change: the awarding body, the UGC entitlement the university holds, the university’s NAAC A accreditation, or the fact that what you finish with is a degree rather than a diploma. The mode of delivery is a logistics decision, not a downgrade of the award.

It does change: how you learn, who you learn alongside, how much self-direction the two years demand, and the practical arrangements around examinations. Those are real differences and this page has spent most of its words on them, because they are the ones that decide whether you finish.

Where it can still fail: a specific recruitment notification that requires a full-time qualification will not be satisfied by a distance-mode degree, whoever awarded it. That is not a comment on Subharti; it is how those notifications work. If a named post is your reason for studying, read its notification before you enrol, not after. The same logic applies to a PhD, where the receiving institution’s own criteria decide.

IICT’s own diplomas are a separate product — and that is fine

Alongside its role as a distance learning centre, IICT awards its own diplomas. Those are not UGC degrees and sit outside UGC purview. IICT does not claim otherwise, and the distinction matters enough to state plainly: an institute diploma is not the Subharti MBA, and where a rule in your path names a degree, only the degree satisfies it.

“Not a degree” is not the same as “not serious”, though. India’s clearest precedent is the IIMs: until the IIM Act changed their legal basis in 2018, each IIM was itself a registered society, and the award it gave was the PGDM — a post-graduate-level diploma rather than a degree — yet nobody in Indian business treated that as second-rate. The distinction is legal standing, not teaching quality, and you choose between them on what your career actually requires.
